These little books in between the main novels are such fun to read! I like getting a change-up from the POV of Kate and they never cease to give oodles additional details that may or may not be necessary.

This story is told from Dali’s POV and, oh boy, you can kind of anticipate how awesome that was. She’s a vegetarian, half-blind, white tiger shifter who has an insane amount of arcane knowledge in her head. She’s also, obviously, in love with Jim. We’ve watched them dance around each other for a little while now and I have been dying to see that get resolved (in a good way). Dali comes back from a bit of a failed drag race (or something) to discover Jim asleep in her bedroom in a totally not good way. Turns out, there has been a magical attack on one of Jim’s buildings and he needs someone to escort him back because he… doesn’t remember.

Of course, it’s some really obscure bit of magic that has begun attacking the cat shifter base. Without going into too many details, the most important part is that this bit of trauma ends up pushing Dali and Jim to face their attraction! Yay for everyone! This book is definitely an essential companion to the main series. A must read!

Magic Dreams A Novella in the World of Kate Daniels eBook Ilona Andrews Reviews

What I really enjoy about these novellas that focus on other characters in the Kate Daniels' world is that we get to see things from a new point-of-view. It becomes obvious that Kate isn't always the most ... reliable narrator. There are things that she simply doesn't, and can't, take into account because she doesn't know everything. Not only do we get expanded views of Atlanta, but also of dynamics between characters, and different viewpoints of characters that we may have thought we knew.

I admit I first read this novella and didn't love Dali. I liked her, but I was frustrated with how she would put people in danger driving on the roads. Willfully endangering others is not a way to my heart. What I learned here is that that view might be overstating things a bit. Dali's capable of driving, and doing so safely even if she is considered legally blind. She's definitely got some things she's been trying to work through, but she's an awesome character that isn't going to let anything get her down for long.

I also really loved seeing Jim through her eyes. We've seen him many times through Kate's eyes, but it's something different when you see him as one who is in love with him does. Jim's still gruff, and alpha; he's definitely in charge and stubborn, but I also had my appreciation of his reliability and steadfastness, and his deep core of honor, increased exponentially.

Ilona Andrews wove this story around Asian culture and mythologies. I really enjoyed their magical take on this culture. I don't want to say too much about it, because I enjoyed the mystery of what was going on, and how Dali investigated and figured out what was going on - which was very different from Kate's way of doing it - was intriguing.

There was also a new character that was introduced that I'm supremely interested in! He shows up again later, and I can't wait to see more of him!!
Well...Jim got himself in a bit of a pickle and when I say a bit I mean a crap ton! He's known for his patience when going into things and well this time around he really should have had some backup. Which Dali points out but you know how he can be. We learn quite a bit more about Dali. She's really sweet and loyal and very smart. She's a bada$$ in her own way. However, she is really insecure especially when it comes to her looks. She's had a thing for Jim for awhile but knows he's never see her that way. He doesnt pay her much attention unless she's in trouble. She'll do anything to save him. She does find out she's wrong that Jim sees her for sure. Being Alpha he's gotta be careful and not take advantage of the situation. He's harbored feelings for her too. He's very good at not showing it. Afterall it IS Jim. I do want to learn more about him. Hopefully 6.5 will reveal some more.
This was a brief novella featuring Dali and Jim from the Kate Daniels series. It was well done and a fun read. I really like reading things from Dali’s perspective and also really enjoyed watching Dali work her own unique brand of magic.

It was also fun to see Jim from Dali’s point of view and to see how Jim acted in more private settings.

My only complaint would be that things ended kind of abruptly. I would have liked a little more Jim and Dali time to wrap things up a bit better.

Overall this was a nice addition to the Kate Daniels series. It’s a cute and fun read and I enjoyed it. It is very short and I wish it had been a bit longer and not ended so abruptly. However, it was fun to read things from Dali’s perspective. I would recommend to fans of the Kate Daniels series; I don’t think this would make a very good stand alone if you aren’t a fan of the series.
This is the novella I've been wanting! The story of Dali and Jim. It is something that was teased in one of the earlier novels, but I've been wanting this story. It is the romance of two unlikely people and I loved it.

I have loved Dali from the moment we met her. She is so quirky! She's a shifter, one of the most celebrated in the shifter world. But she's a vegan. Yes, a vegan shifter. And shifting isn't easy for her. And on top of that, she is practically blind. She has self-esteem issues of the highest sort and compensates by drag racing, despite her eyesight. I love her. And then there's Jim. Usually surly, he's the head of security for the King of the Beasts. And, for once, he has to rely on someone else to help him. Enter Dali.

The romance is sweet and rife with all those bizarre issues that exist in relationships. And then if the romance is between shifters? Well, things only get more complicated.

Overall This is a great side story to the series. They are two very different characters and their relationship is just one I rooted for.
