Thrust into the unlikely role of professional "literary walking tour" guide, an expat writer provides the most irresistibly witty and revealing tour of Paris in years. In this enchanting memoir, acclaimed author and long-time Paris resident John Baxter remembers his yearlong experience of giving "literary walking tours" through the city. Baxter sets off with unsuspecting tourists in tow on the trail of Paris' legendary artists and writers of the past.
Along the way, he tells the history of Paris through a brilliant cast of characters the favorite cafes of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and James Joyce; Pablo Picasso's underground Montmartre haunts; the bustling boulevards of the late-19th-century flâneurs; the secluded "Little Luxembourg" gardens beloved by Gertrude Stein; the alleys where revolutionaries plotted; and finally Baxter's own favorite walk near his home in Saint-Germain-des-Pres.
Paris, by custom and design, is a pedestrian's city - each block a revelation, every neighborhood a new feast for the senses, a place rich with history and romance at every turn. The Most Beautiful Walk in the World is your guide, par excellence, to the true, off-the-beaten-path heart of the City of Lights.

I am a Paris fanatic having spent some wonderful days in this fabulous city. If you are a Hemingway fan and read A Moveable Feast, this book is a great companion to that work.Baxter takes you on a walk in Hemingway's footsteps, past his previous addresses, his favorite cafes, and other haunts he loved.
One of the things I liked to do was to take Google Earth's street view and actually follow the directions Baxter gives in the book to "walk" down the streets this book takes you.
We are going back to Paris in 2018, the Lord willing, and I will use this book to familiarize myself with those walks before I actually walk them. I am journaling that future trip so I have been snipping screen shots from Street View, printing them, and pasting them in the journal to pre-plan the journey. That way I will have the journal entries, descriptions, and "photos" that will help guide me.

The Most Beautiful Walk in the World A Pedestrian in Paris (Audible Audio Edition) John Baxter Graham Halstead Tantor Audio Books Reviews
I really enjoyed the first three-quarters of this book. Baxter's descriptions of modern-day haunts in Paris mixed well with the glimpses into the city's literary history that he offered. He proved to be an effective story teller with his vivid descriptions of people and places - some lines are still in my mind 3 weeks after finishing the book. My issue with the book (which prevented the 5th star) is two-fold First, my favorite part of the book was when Baxter described his days as a tour guide and I don't think he explored that part of his story enough (after all, the book is titled after these tours) and second, the last quarter of the book really dragged on without purpose. Overall, though, I would recommend this book for people who love Paris or want to learn more about the city's literary past.
I've been to Paris a number of times and I love the city. I also like reading Paris books. This is not a book for first timers nor is it a book that will provide you with much practical tour information, if that is what you are seeking. The walking described is not the "begin at Point A and finish at Point B" type.
This book is primarily (but not exclusively)about the Latin Quarter, where the author lives, and concentrates on the more "colorful" side of the Quarter, particularly as pertains to the American expat literary figures who haunted the area.
This is definitely an entertaining read. The author is a long time resident, married to a French woman and apparently fluent in French. He also works part time as a guide. So it is clear that M. Baxter is very much a part of the city he loves. I learned quite a few tidbits about places I've been to and not been to. If you are a lover of Paris, you will enjoy this book.
Anyone who has ever stood in front of a group expected to provide a vivid, engaging, and memorable explanation as an "expert" will connect with John Baxter. What John Baxter provides in "The Most Beautiful Walk . . ." is much more about connecting his "clients" to Paris than it is about the tourist checklist. He becomes the "accidental" tour guide, brought in as the rookie substitute to replace the high-priced academic expert who has flopped with a group attending a high-priced literary seminar.
Baxter's own passions for Paris as a walking city provide the storyline for what is really a "Bad News Bears" story line. The under-prepared, accidental tour guide finds spectacular success because he comes to understand that finding a personal connection to Paris for his clients is what works. This starts with a discourse on the drug culture of the 1920s prompted by the chance sighting of a hooka in a shop window. The Ivy League tourists love the edginess. Baxter learns to bring something of Paris to his clients' interests. My favorite chapter in that vein deals with a couple of loud and boisterous women from Texas. Everything is bigger, better, more modern in Texas. Nothing catches their fancy until he takes them to the haunts where Hemingway, et. al., put on the free nosebag. Free food -- a buffet -- lights their fire, and they become converts to the cult of the Parisian literati. They are thrilled with the rest of the day. They found a connection.
Those who want to find a guide to Paris in Baxter's work certainly have better alternatives. Baxter offers a number of interesting contextual insights into urban life, and why Paris is a walking city, while so many other cities are not. Still, "The Most Beautiful Walk . . ." is really most suited for those who have faced a group expecting an enlivening, engaging tour or presentation. How do you "grab" that group and get them fired up, on your side, and ready to go? The book is a meditation on becoming a tour guide in Paris. How did he get his inspiration? How does he communicate it to his clients?
I was in Paris this past summer and enjoyed my walks as well. There's no city in the world more beautiful to just stroll through and if you can't do it in person, at least enjoy it through the eyes of someone else and photos. It's too beautiful to be missed in any form.
What a great book!! Baxter takes you all over Paris but this is not a guide book or a list of must see sights for the tourist. What it is is a stroll through Paris with someone who lives there and loves his city. Baxter talks history, art, bars and bartenders, Hemingway, Tolkas, tourists and more as he walks through the city. His love for its history, the people who live there and lived there, it's architecture and grime is is both interesting and enthralling, and he makes you feel if you're walking by his side.
