One guy intent on caution. One an adrenaline junkie. Love could be one risk too many. March is determined to lose the numbness that accompanies a history of loss and blame. Desperate to feel something—anything—the adrenaline junkie base jumps off cliffs, soars on hang gliders, and embarks on dangerous sea-borne rescue missions. But any release he feels is fleeting, and when you play Russian roulette with fate, eventually you come crashing down. No matter how hard Caleb tries to forget his past, a dark shadow is always behind him. When a bizarre turn of events results in him being trapped in a sea cave, Caleb wonders how his mantra—safety at all costs—could have failed him. On the point of drowning, he’s stunned when March surfaces in the cave. March’s disregard for the rules saves Caleb’s life but gets March into a heap of trouble. Not least of which is the guy shivering in the boat next to him. March tries to ignore Caleb but it’s already too late. Together, they take small, awkward steps toward love. But Caleb’s past is waiting to sink in its claws…and this time, it could drag him to his death. Warning This book contains difficult flashbacks of child abduction and sexual violence, but also the incredible perseverance of two men who never give up on love—or each other.

In Barbara Elsborg’s latest 284 page, m/m fiction romantic suspense story titled "Give Yourself Away", she takes the reader into "sensitive" territory where my adrenaline was left pumping , my jaw dropping and my head shaking. The story had me hooked from the first few paragraphs and I could not put my Kindle away.
This is the story of Caleb and March who do not disappoint the reader regarding man’s ability to love another man unconditionally. There is no coincidence from the turn of events that brought Caleb and March together. Both men are presented as physically appealing yet quite opposites in physical frame, possessing diverse interests and methodical approaches towards life. Caleb a perfectionist is cautious, loves ballet and woodworking. March’s character is in contrast to Caleb’s character as he throws caution to the wind without hesitation. He is a teacher, not out as a gay man to his family, ex-fiancé and his peers. March is a man’s man (no pun intended), the epitome of an adrenaline junkie. It is a turn of fate when Caleb becomes careless and lands in a sea cave only to be rescued by March. There are no coincidences when fate brings these two hearts together.
It is Caleb's back story that has my adrenaline on the rise. The theme of "hope" is shared by both men but not identically. Throughout the story both men are seeking “hope”. One man hopes to discover and the other hopes not to be discovered. I applaud the writer’s handling of Caleb’s background story written very vividly and with sensitivity. There are many areas in this storyline that alter between past and present events. I had to take a serious breather to take an “OMG” moment. Barbara presented Caleb's youth and the telling of his story of self-acceptance (no this is not a typical coming of age story) in a world that looks very different as an adult with “hope” that everyone gets there dues in the end.
I enjoy Barbara's clues for the readers she subtly slips in throughout the story. I am a fan of Barbara's imagery and landscapes for I feel like am almost a voyeur. I admire Barbara's homage to the English equivalent of the coastguard and the volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way every day to save others. This a a must read for m/m readers who want a storyline that leaves your heart pumping.

Give Yourself Away Barbara Elsborg 9781546404668 Books Reviews

I forgot that I had pre-ordered this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it downloaded. I had seen a few warnings about triggers. Oh lord, page 1 nearly did me in. I knew what was going to happen. I forced my self to keep reading because nothing happened. and then, there it was. This book was written with flashbacks and they are not good flashbacks. It was a struggle to keep going but I couldn't but it down. I don't want to give spoilers but I am going to say I adored Caleb! His fear, cautiousness, his worry - all these I can relate to. But dear god, his strength was amazing. I cheered for him the whole story. Truly amazing.
This was a great story, with a suspenseful plot and well-drawn characters. For all the warnings, though, I didn't find it all that shocking, considering all the real life stories that you read about in the news. There were a few things that bumped me out of the story for a few seconds, but I got right back in it. Toward the end, one of the MCs was called by his real name, then his adopted name (narrative, not dialogue), and throughout the book, there was no clear break in between the present day characters when each one was the focus.I was reading about Caleb and BOOM! There was March doing something, and I had to go back and make sure what was happening there. A small gap between the paragraphs would have been appreciated.
This was my first book by this author but will certainly not be my last. There were some tough aspects of this book to read but the difficult subject matter was handled well and I almost felt like the author was able to accomplish so much more by saying less. My heart broke for both Caleb and March and I liked how their relationship developed despite their obvious differences and brutal pasts. I also liked that neither wanted the past to define who they were and what their relationship would be. There was a great balance of humor, drama and suspense to keep me guessing and hoping these two men would find their HEA. A great read.
This is one of those Holy Sh*t books. Holy Sh*t, I didn’t want to put it down, and Holy Sh*t, I can’t believe the author tackled this subject matter. This book deals with child abduction a 12 year imprisonment and more, BUT that is not what this author dwells on nor is it what this story is really about, it is really the back story and is used to explain the characters in their contemporary forms.

Each chapter grants the reader a new perspective on how strong these characters really are, how they have grown how they have moved on, being stronger than what they had been made to feel, to get on with their lives.

Barbara did such a FANTASTIC job in taking a difficult subject and letting the reader understand what happened but not letting them feel awkward about the circumstances. What I’m trying to say here is that what happened was horrific, the abduction of young children, but that is not what the author dwelled on, she gave us a feathering of emotions that helped to build the characters as adults.

This is a book that needs to be experienced. I think that every reader will take away something different from it. Here’s what I took away. Caleb and March are survivors. Caleb is strong, just wow, I am so impressed with the emotional character that he was written with. Of course what he went through does still affect his adult life, it is Caleb’s willingness to fight past it and not let it run his life now that is inspiring.

When you read this get ready for an emotional ride that only this story can take you on.
