Personal experiences bring the past closer to us.. Historians and novelists depend on and build on them for their books.. It's more fun for me when I can get the details from the Horse's mouth, I had read too many literary allusions to John Evelyn Diaries not to finally give in to ordering his Diary. Unfortunately this was his last one, so the many footnotes that referred to earlier Diary incidents were lost on me, I knew of course the historical background of King Charles II and the Restoration period and some of the names associated with his Court, but too many of the footnotes were above my radar. Evelyn is best for factual reporting, for he is too upright in character to allow himself to be considered gossipy or amusing.Tags : Amazon.com: The Diary of John Evelyn (First Person Singular) (9780851156392): John Evelyn, Guy de la Bedoyere: Books,John Evelyn, Guy de la Bedoyere,The Diary of John Evelyn (First Person Singular),Boydell Press,0851156398,British Isles,England,English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh,Great Britain;Court and courtiers;Early works to 1800.,Great Britain;History;Stuarts, 1603-1714.,Great Britain;Social life and customs;Early works to 1800.,1620-1706,American - General,Biography,Biography Autobiography,Court and courtiers,Diaries,Early works to 1800,Evelyn, John,Evelyn, John,,GENERAL,GREAT BRITAIN - HISTORY - TUDOR AND STUART (1485-1714),Great Britain,Great BritainBritish Isles,Historical - British,History,LITERARY CRITICISM European English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh,Literary,Literary Criticism,Literary Criticism American General,Literature: History & Criticism,Non-Fiction,ScholarlyUndergraduate,Stuarts, 1603-1714
The Diary of John Evelyn First Person Singular John Evelyn Guy de la Bedoyere Books Reviews
Evelyn is very different from Pepys, whom he knew. Unlike Pepys, Evelyn was a strait-laced fellow, so we get no juicy stories of his amours. He hardly speaks of his wife and consequently never mentions any arguments they might have had. He tells few personal anecdotes. He also has little to say about the great plague year or the great fire of London. Pepys gives a lot more detail on these subjects.
What he does deal with rather extensively are the meetings of the Royal Society, of which he was a member. It was hard for me to get excited about these. Nevertheless, it is good to have this book available.
This novel is a very enjoyable read. It definitely reflects the sensibilities of the mid 20th century in its attitudes towards relationships between women and men, but if you can look past that, it's a fun read. I laughed out loud many, many times.
Love all of it, love British history, especially also the century in which Pepys too wroet his diary.
