1 heroine (Georgina, Rose from Vampire Academy, Eugenie from Dark Swan)1 love interest in the "good guy" category (Seth, Dimitri from VA, Kiyo from Dark Swan)
1 "bad boy" to make a love triangle (Roman the rogue half-angel seeking revenge, Adrian the playboy from VA, Dorian the power-hungry fae from Dark Swan)
1 token 2nd girl to form a quadrangle / wake-up call for the heroine when her boys pay attention to the addition (Maddie, Christian's aunt whose name I can't remember from VA, that fae queen who's preggo with Kiyo's kid from Dark Swan)
Add in a lot of unnecessary drama to prolong the series
This is the recipe in Richelle Mead's stories. The primary love interest is always on the side of good, makes forays into the Dark Side and loses the girl, allowing the Bad Boy to swoop in and take over for a time, but the heroine eventually realizes her One True Love is the Good Guy, so the Bad Boy backs off to nurse a broken heart.
Richelle Mead is a good author, so you get sucked into her stories, but I wish there was... more. For several books now, the plot hints about Georgina and something not quite right with her contract, but Georgina only realizes she should put more effort into investigating this five books into the series. This little plot is stretched to the limit and buried under all the drama that could've been avoided.
Georgina and Seth angst repeatedly, for several books, about hurting Maddie, but because the author had to end the draggy book at some point, they eventually fall in bed together, reconcile and strengthen their resolve to be together despite the fact that it'll break Maddie's heart and shorten Seth's lifespan.
Like. WTF dude. You waited five books and added a load of drama that could've been avoided four books ago? What a tease.
And the one thing that could've solved the mystery of the contracts - Jerome owing Georgina a favor - was wasted on a 'bring me to Seth before he runs away forevah' wish.
I hate it when I'm following a series and it feels like the author is prolonging it just for the sake of having more books, and therefore more money, but doesn't care that there's little to no plot, so they try to cover it with angst and drama instead. Haaaaaaaate iiiiiit. It makes me feel cheated afterwards and I end up cursing myself for falling for it, yet again.
And in this book the author doesn't even try anymore. The first half, before she gets kidnapped, is evenly-paced and provides some entertainment in the form of the sexual chemistry between Roman and Georgina. But when Georgina gets trapped in the dream world, here is where it gets Vampire Academy-ish and we get glimpses of everybody else's adventures when Georgina channels Rose Hathaway and ~sees it through the eyes of her friends~. But wait! ~Is it real or is it fake?~ Ugh. After she gets kidnapped it drags and the reader is subjected to flashbacks of Georgina's past, presumably with past incarnations of Seth. The dying plot tries to convince the reader it's still alive by adding the ~is it real or is it fake~ drama into the mix, but it's nothing but fluffed up recycled bits that were sprinkled in the previous books.
I'm still optimistic about Iron Crowned, hoping it won't follow the same pattern, and I've pre-ordered Spirit Bound and am too lazy to cancel it so I'll be paying for that too, but this book marks the end of my Georgina Kincaid book purchases.

Succubus Shadows Richelle Mead 9780553820317 Books Reviews
Succubus Shadows is certainly the strangest of the series, but that didn’t make me love it any less! It picks up several months later with Georgina settled into her new condo, with her new roommate, and helping to plan Maddie’s wedding. Needless to say, she’s not too thrilled about that last one, but she puts on a happy face for her best friend. At least until something calls to her in her sleep and she suddenly vanishes. She’s trapped in the dream world with no hope of getting out, except maybe the man who owns her heart.
Succubus Shadows is weird. The dream world is an interesting place, although it’s quite terrible for Georgina. She’s forced to witness her past and present, but she can’t always tell what’s true and what isn’t. Of course, her past is easier to decipher, but what’s happening in her absence? Is anyone even looking for her? Are they talking about her behind her back? But we all know that Georgina is a fighter. She’s never going to lose hope that someone cares about her and will come looking. But then, there’s the aftermath.
The ending of Succubus Shadows still makes me antsy! Georgina is on the verge of a very big revelation. If you pay attention to the clues (which are much more noticeable upon this reread), you can easily figure it out. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s big! It’s huge! It’s shocking! It makes my heart hurt just like the rest of this series has! And once Georgina knows for sure, there’s still the matter of what can she even do about it.
This is the fifth installment of Richelle Mead's Succubus/Georgina Kincaid series. I still enjoyed this book, but at this point the sequels are showing their formula a little too clearly.
We have some new immortals show up in town. This time it's Simone, a succubus from out of town visiting Seattle on "vacation". Surprise, surprise, she almost immediately starts pursuing Seth, much to Georgina's irritation.
There are also more ups and downs with Georgina and Seth, namely that Seth is now engaged to their mutual friend Maddie and Maddie, still unaware of the Georgina/Seth history, is involving Georgina in all the wedding preparations.
And, of course, there's a new mysterious happening. Georgina keeps having these weird blackout spells where she's hearing/seeing some kind of siren song that keeps drawing her in and all her usual sources don't have much help for her. In a turn of events from previous books, this time it's Georgina who ultimately ends up in trouble and has to be saved by her friends.
I did enjoy this read, and as usual with this series, it was a very quick, popcorn like read. However, I do feel this is probably the weakest installment in the series, feeling a bit like a placeholder/set up for the following book.
To me, this book was a way to take up time and write about Georgina's past, instead of continuing the story.
That's how I looked at it anyways.
With that being said, you absolutely need to know all the the past. It's essential.
There's a bigger picture here and whisperings of a bigger plan in action. It involves Carter.
Out of the entire series, Carter has been my favorite character.
He's not featured much and very mysterious. Rarely shows his true feelings, but when he does, it's extraordinary.
In fact, I wish there was a series devoted to Carter. Something with all of the angels, but Carter as the MC.
Carter is overlooked so much in these books, but his motives are so unclear.
If there isn't a series featuring him and the angels, there should be.
