First off, if you are buying this book and it has a blue cover, it is the light novel. If it has a red cover, it is the manga. Another way to tell the two apart (since it can be a royal pain in the butt on Amazon) is to look at the cover, and check if it says "Illustrated By". All light novels list the artist under "Illustrated by", as the books only contain limited spot illustrations.

Now that all that is out of the way, lets get to the actual book.

I really enjoyed the anime, and I thought I would give the original light novel a chance. If you have seen the anime, then you are already well versed in what happens in this book. The only real difference is added insight into the minds of several of the characters, plus a few extended moments with Emi's friend, Rika.

Even though I was already pretty familiar with the plot, I seriously enjoyed this book. The writing is fast and fun, the plot moves, and the interesting and colorful characters keep you engaged. It is also interesting to see where both the anime and manga series started, and how closely they hold to the original text. While it may take a book or two to get past what the anime covered, I am for sure going to keep reading, as I found this book to be immensely enjoyable. I also enjoyed the little character "resume" forms, and the attractive color art presented in the beginning of the book.

If you are a fan of The Devil is a Part-Timer in its anime form, then I highly recommend checking out the original source material. Very well written, and highly entertaining.

This is a fun story in which the devil (from the world of Ente Isla) must work a part-time job in Japan. The story centers around conflicts between the devil, the hero, noble or less-than-noble groups from the other world, and the very-much-our-world struggle to pay bills.

To me, the charm of this story is its light-hearted and comedic nature, though it certainly has its darker, more serious moments. After all, the main character is the merciless and cruel leader of the demon world. What could he know about what it means to be a human? What could he know of the pain the hero and her companions have suffered?

The book is written and translated well enough. It's no century-defining work, but it is my favorite Japanese light novel to date and one of my personal favorite stories. I would not consider it a "must read" by any means but it is quite enjoyable. 9/10

I first watched the anime, which honestly gave me a stronger sense of what the characters' personalities are like than I would have gotten from this book alone. Do note that the anime (at least, at this time) does not cover the entire written story.
Its a good book to read for people that haven't seen the anime. Its not a manga! Its a novel so don't buy if your thinking its a manga b/c its not.
I read it and loved how fast the story was going and for the price your getting a lot.
I'll keep my review brief as I'm quite biased when it comes to this series so I'm probably the most unsuitable person to be an unbiased reviewer.

For those who aren't (or are) familiar with this series--whether you prefer to call it Hataraku Maou-sama!, The Devil is a Part-timer!, or Demon Lord at Work!--there are four different versions of it the anime, light novel, manga, and manga spin-off (Hataraku Maou-sama! High School!). This is the LIGHT NOVEL.
Out of the three book versions of this series the novel and the manga always seem to get confused with one another but it's rather simple
- Wagahara + 029 (Oniku) = novel
- Wagahara + Akio Hiiragi = manga
Oniku generally handles character design and novel illustrations but she does not illustrate the manga.
Akio only illustrates the manga.

Now with that bit of explanation out of the way, I can attempt to express how much I adore this series.
Genre-wise I always tend to favor horrors and thrillers of the like, followed by light hearted series and dumb comedies. A series about Satan coming to Japan and having to work minimum wage at MgRonalds to support his demonic househusband while the daughter of an angel is trying to murder him? Sounds iffy but we'll try it. I never thought that simple thought would turn into my favorite series of all time. I can't express how ecstatic I was back when Yen Press first announced they were going to be translating and publishing all versions.

As a lot of people I heard of the novel via watching the anime when it first aired, and for anyone who is thinking of purchasing this novel because of it you'll basically just be given a review on what the anime had covered as it pretty much follows novels #1 & #2 fully. Because of that I won't go into detail about what the basic plot was for this novel in particular.

The translation can be a bit iffy in places, especially in the first couple of books, but otherwise I love how well written and translated it is. I didn't know what to expect from the English version of the novel either but my biggest hope was that they would keep the color fold out illustrations at the front of every novel, and I must say I was so happy when I saw they kept them as well as translated them as well. The same goes for the character files & bonus content in the back; they even included Wagahara's "notes from the author" page.

Even with the few minor hiccups in translation I could never say enough positive things about this series. If you like an easy comedy that can turn to a drama, filled with memorable characters, cute illustrations, and a capticaptivating writing style then please give it a chance.
