Once upon a time, there was the new girl Siri Alvarsson and her only best friend in the whole wide world, her mother Fredrika. They had just moved from sunny, warm Tucson, Arizona to chilly Falls Depot, Vermont because her mother was once in the military and they were always moving around even when her mother was no longer a part of it. At first the book starts out slow with the two carrying moving boxes into their new home and Siri telling us more about her background and some awesome details like how she gets martial arts training from her mother to test her strength and level of endurance. The entire book is told in the first person point of view of Siri’s who mentions that her and her mother are very close who watch movies at home together and that Fredrika is always coming up with green drink combos because she believed in eating healthy food but also making room for chocolates cause she thinks that they are “one of the four basic food groups”. On those first few days of them trying to get acquainted with their new environment, they go out shopping for clothes, school supplies, and snowboarding gear and lunching at a pizza hangout called Giovanni’s, where Siri meets a guy by the name of Rowan Carey who eventually becomes her boyfriend and schoolmate at Union High, the local secondary school in Falls Depot. The rest of the book then goes on to the usual teenage stuff like Siri’s daily at Union High, her rivalry with a Rowan-admirer, and her meeting Rowan’s parents at Rowan’s remarkable home. In between all this are mentions of Siri’s visions of faraway places where natural and man-made disasters are destroying them. This book has a feel of Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight series but this time with faes, druids, and talking animals instead of vampires and werewolves. It is a Young Adult tale with Norse and Celtic mythology elements in it which I find very fresh and interesting due to my knowledge of Valhalla, the Valkyrie, Thor, Odin, Freyr, and fairy legend characters like Morgaine Le Fay. I can assure you that if you are a fan of Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and the aforementioned mythologies, you will adore Siri, Rowan, and a hunky character by the name of Alec Ward who Siri two-times with (this was the only disappointing element of this story, the fact that Siri romances with Alec behind Rowan’s back, I thought it made her distasteful and flawed).
But anyway, nobody’s perfect right? Not in real life and definitely not a work of fantasy as that is the genre this book falls under. The names of the characters are Scandinavian and Irish and I had a funny feeling of Mariah Carey in it because one character was called Mireia and Rowan’s last name was Carey so my Mariah Carey fandom was tickled by this. This book also summons my knowledge of such masterpieces like Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream comedy and the more recent Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. One alluring factor to note is the mentions of essential oils and herbs like sandalwood and coriander to name a few. If you’re looking for something magical and captivating then I simply suggest getting this one. As of the moment, it is FREE in Kindle form at Amazon online. Hurry before this offer ends to start a new series since this is the first part of a multi-part series called Inner Origins. Enjoy it for yourself and Happy Magical 2017!

Shades of Valhalla Inner Origins Book One eBook Ellis Logan Reviews
A light read with a compelling story line. Entertaining and thought provoking. Will enjoy reading more from this author and would recommend to friends.
truly enjoyed the book and am waiting for the next installment!
This book is so much fun and so magical. The only thing to make it perfect ... make it twice as long. Thank you Ellis Logan for this beautiful introduction to Valhalla and the faes.
Great for all ages. Love the fae and the amazing world this author has so creatively shared. Adorable characters with amusing sense of humor. Super enjoyed this book and saddened to see it had ended all too soon for me!
Very good read. A wonderful view into another amazing world that could possibly connect with ours if you suspend disbelief. Loved the characters, Alex, Rowan & Siri. Loved the detail, the imagination & the colors!
I absolutely loved this book! I love books about the Fae and this book did not disappoint! I could hardly bring myself to put it down. I loved the story line, characters, descriptions, everything. Even when the book opened it was not boring. There was always something going on. Can’t wait to pick up the next book!
Ellis Logan has come onto the YA novel scene with a strong first novel. She gives us a strong, funny, teen-age protagonist by the name of Siri Alvarsson. Siri is a likable character who, despite her normal adolescent insecurities, can still hold her own, which is refreshing to see.
More than a coming of age story, it felt like a coming into one's own story. And yes, it has the requisite love triangle, of course, because she’s a teenager discovering herself as a woman. Siri finds herself coming into some abilities (coming into her power as a woman?) which get progressively stronger. She ends up on a quest and must make choices and decisions along the way. On one level, her choice could simply determine the next turn in the quest to save those she’s trying to save. However, on another level, her choice is all about her. Does she choose to honor and support her own strength and power, and independence, or does she give her power away?
The action is amazing, as is the folklore background. Logan's descriptive wordplay is impressive, painting the scene for us like a canvas. There were literally spots I wanted to stop and enter the book, they sounded so lovely.
I am excited by this new series and eagerly look forward to the next book.
I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
